Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2026 June 19 [2]A sunset sky is seen above a dark sloping horizon. A tall tree is on the left. The sky is partly cloudy with a crescent Moon on the upper right and a bright planet just to the right of the tree. Next to the tree in the foreground on the right is an easel showing the famous van Gogh painting Starry Night. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Starry Night II Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Rodrigo Guerra, Original Painting: [4]Vincent van Gogh Explanation: Does this scene look familiar? It is a modern recreation of the famous painting [5]Starry Night by [6]Vincent van Gogh. Both [7]the image and the painting depict a tall tree on the left, a [8]crescent moon on the upper right, the [9]planet Venus just to the right of the tree, a foreground horizon rising from left to right, and [10]clouds above the horizon. Differences include that the photograph was taken in mid-April earlier this year in [11]Cascavel, [12]Brazil, while the painting was composed in [13]Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, [14]France, in 1889. The [15]original Starry Night is considered by many to be one of the three [16]most famous paintings in the world today and a statement about the [17]wonders of the night sky. Today is (roughly) the [18]anniversary of the morning that van Gogh saw the sky that he later painted in [19]his version of Starry Night.
