Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 July 21 [2]In a starfield a nebula appears that has three main bright regions surrounding a dark central nebula. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Cat's Paw Nebula from Webb Space Telescope Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]ESA, [5]CSA, [6]STScI Explanation: Nebulas are perhaps as famous for being identified with familiar shapes as perhaps [7]cats are for getting into [8]trouble. Still, no known cat could have created the vast [9]Cat's Paw Nebula [10]visible toward the constellation of the Scorpion ([11]Scorpius). At 5,700 [12]light years distant, Cat's [13]Paw is an [14]emission nebula within a larger molecular cloud. Alternatively known as the [15]Bear Claw Nebula and cataloged as [16]NGC 6334, stars nearly ten times the mass of our [17]Sun have been born there in only the past few million years. Pictured [18]here is a recently released image of the Cat's Paw taken in [19]infrared light by the [20]James Webb Space Telescope. This [21]newly detailed view into [22]the nebula helps provide insight for how [23]turbulent [24]molecular clouds turn gas into stars.
